Mindfulness New Year

January 30, 2019
Pine Island Eagle

To the editor:

As a New Year's resolution, I set a goal to empower my life, so I signed up for the 4-day Mindfulness Immersion workshop based on the curriculum of the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program. While growing up in California in the '60s I had been introduced to a variety of physical, mental and spiritual practices, so I was open-minded to new experiences that are designed to activate stress-reducing internal mechanisms, cultivate compassion for oneself and others, and increase effectiveness in interpersonal communications. During the mindfulness effective technique practices I was able to get off autopilot mode and discovered myself focusing my awareness on the present moment. The Mindfulness Immersion workshop has been an eye opener for me on how I had perceived and navigated my life in the past. I have become self-aware in that I am now a more centered and grounded person as I practice the therapeutic techniques that I learned on my daily life stresses. As of 2019, I have been enlightened on the interconnection that the body, mind and emotion have on ones overall well-being.

According to Jon Kabat-Zinn, founding executive director of the Center for Mindfulness, "Mindfulness is the gateway into the full dimensionality of being human." For anyone who seeks to be reconnected and nurtured, the mindfulness practice can benefit you to focus on being intensely aware of what you're sensing and feeling in the moment, but without interpretation or judgment. For anyone who is interested on the island, the Matlacha Wellness Center offers mindfulness classes on Mondays at 4 p.m. and Wednesdays at 3 p.m. I truly believe that bringing mindfulness and compassion into any form of communication with others can result in a significant deepening of our understanding of others, as well as, a more peaceful society. A mindfulness new year can bring compassion and connection into the hearts, homes, and communities, as well as, a more kind and conscious world.
