New commercial pumper destined for Matlacha Station #4

By ED FRANKS ( , Pine Island Eagle

Last Tuesday morning, the third new commercial pumper fire truck arrived at Station #1.

"Last year we were able to replace two of our outdated engines from 1995 and 2001," Matlacha/Pine Island Fire Contro; District Chief Ben Mickuleit said. "Today we received this third truck. Once Station #4 in Matlacha is completed, this engine will be housed there."

Each truck is built on a Freightliner 4-door top-mount pump chassis with a Cummins 360HP motor. The truck also has a 1,000-gallon water tank capacity with 20 gallons of foam.

Matlacha Station #4 will house this new commercial pumper fire truck this summer.

"All three trucks are identical," Mickuleit said. "There's much more storage on these new trucks for storage of equipment. Everything from Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (Air Packs) to our new extrication equipment. And it's important that these trucks are identical so our firefighters can get the equipment quickly and efficiently."

New lighting was added to the truck for greater illumination at night.

"When equipment gets old, it also becomes less reliable," Mickuleit said. "Reliability is important. These new engines are equipped with a 1,000-gallon internal water tank for a quick fire attack and a rear booster reel (1-inch rubber fire hose) for a quicker attack on certain fire scenarios.

"The completion date for Station #4 is May 13, 2019," Mickuleit said. Once the construction is complete, we can the get the appliances and furniture installed. I would estimate that Station #4 will be up and running in the summer and we'll deliver the new engine then."
