By ED FRANKS ( , Pine Island Eagle

Friday morning at approximately 6:15, the Matlacha/Pine Island Fire Department was alerted to a houseboat fire in Jug Creek in Bokeelia.

"I heard the fire trucks go down the street shortly after 6 a.m.," nearby resident Robert Ballard said. "Some neighbors said they heard explosions and you could see the houseboat was completely engulfed in flames."

Neighbors reported the houseboat was owned by a 58-year-old Fort Myers man, Kevin Bill.

"The houseboat has been anchored offshore for a couple of years now," Ballard said. "The owners name is Kevin and has been working on the boat. I'm hoping he isn't out there."

Kevin Bill's car was parked on Porta Bella Street wrapped in police tape, residents said.

A second boat, possibly the boat Bill used to get to the houseboat, burned nearby.

Cape Coral, FWC and Boca Grande fire crews were also on the scene.

The fire is still under investigation by Lee County Sheriff's Office and the State Fire Marshall.
