Parents who have a child turning 5 years old on, or before Sept. 1, 2019 have the opportunity to pre-register them for kindergarten through the end of the month.

School District of Lee County spokesperson Rob Spicker said they are very pleased with the participation thus far - about 800 families have taken advantage of pre-registration as of Wednesday afternoon.

"We are excited so far about the turnout. It's been a steady flow of parents since the beginning," Executive Director of Student Enrollment Soretta Ralph said in a prepared statement. "We hope to see many more before the pre-registration period ends Nov. 30."

Spicker said they are hoping to pre-register between 1,200 and 1,500 students before the period ends. The district projects 5,800 students will start kindergarten this year.

Those who would like to take advantage of the option should bring a physical exam dated within the last year; Florida Certificate of Immunization; proof of address; original birth certificate; social security card if available and custody documents if applicable.

The pre-printed application will be mailed to parents in January, providing parents with the opportunity to go online and rank schools in order of their preference for student enrollment. The first application period will be from Jan. 14, through March 1, 2019.

"You can rank the schools online and sign up for student enrollment from the ease of your home," Spicker said.

Those who register online will receive the results of their child's school a week earlier.

The district decided to offer the pre-registration because when registration opens in January long lines accumulate, leaving parents waiting for many hours.

"That first day of student enrollment always puts a line out the door. You don't have to be part of that crowd . . . one, two, three, four hours waiting to enroll your child," Spicker said. "The only time you have to come to student enrollment is before they start kindergarten. This is a window for parents to come at another time where the crowds will be less and the lines will be less to get in and out quicker."

There are three Student Enrollment offices, open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Those include 2855 Colonial Blvd., Fort Myers; 360 Santa Barbara Blvd. N., Cape Coral and 1262 Wings Way, Suite 207, Lehigh Acres.

The offices will be closed for Thanksgiving on Thursday, Nov. 22, and Friday, Nov. 23.

"We hope and encourage as many parents as possible will take advantage of early registration period and avoid lines in January," Spicker said.

Once the pre-registration is completed he encourages parents to look for the open house calendars, so they can visit elementary schools and have a jump start at finding the ones that are the right fit for their child.

Most of the open houses will be held in December and January.

"We will be making announcements and posting schedules as the days get set," he said
