Fire station groundbreaking set for Friday

October 17, 2018
By ED FRANKS (efranks@breezenewspapers.com) , Pine Island Eagle

This Friday, Oct. 19, at 9 a.m., a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Matlacha fire station will be held

"We're very excited to announce this groundbreaking ceremony," Fire Chief Ben Mickuleit said. "This has been a long time coming and it will mean a lot to the people we serve."

The property is located at 3500 S.W. Pine Island Road and was purchased in 2008 to better serve the people of Matlacha and Cape Royal. When the economy crashed, the station was put on hold.

The new fire Station #4 will face east/west on Pine Island Road with access for the apparatus (fire engines) to the bays from Scallop Drive and Pompano Avenue. No access is planned directly from Pine Island Road.

"A unique feature of Station #4 is it will be a drive-through station," Mickuleit said. "Trucks will go in one side and out the other - no more backing into the bay."

The site plan calls for the widening of Pompano Avenue and Scallop Drive to county standards and both streets will be paved. The plans also include an additional room for another apparatus that may be added in the future.

The present plan for Station #4 is for one brush truck and one fire engine but modifications were made to the bays to accommodate larger ladder trucks in the future.

Plans include four enclosed sleeping quarters, a community room, three bathrooms, two fire apparatus bays, a kitchen, storage room, exercise rooms and a contamination room.

The building will be approximately 6,142 square feet with the option for future expansions.

"We discussed a number of things along the planning stage and made some minor changes," Mickuleit said. "We made the community room larger and we did address some security issues Commissioner (John) Cammick brought up. These issues were taken care of with security doors and technology,"

"I'm excited about this new fire house," Mickuleit said. "The reason we purchased the property in 2008 was to provide equal response time anywhere in our fire district which extends to Cape Royal. This fire house will be minutes from both Matlacha and Cape Royal."

The property is located at 3500 3520 S.W. Pine Island Road.
