Lake O releases and reservoir

August 1, 2018

To the editor:

I was dismayed to see Sen. Bill Nelson's picture on the front page of your paper next to the headline about "Lake O." What's he done about it? I moved to Florida in 1987. He was in office and the Herbert Hoover Dike was potentially failing. Now, over 30 years later, he's still in office and the dike is still failing. The actions that may finally, partially address the lake overflow problem were spurred by moves made by the governor and the state Legislature not Nelson or the feds. Also, it's stunning to realize that the damage being done to the environments on the highly populated coasts is being incurred to benefit only 37,000 people living south of the lake. Those properties should have been condemned and the residents relocated decades ago so the lake overflow could flow naturally to the south into the Everglades as it used to.
