Friday evening about 200 Pine Islanders arrived for the annual Christmas Tree lighting at Fire Station #1.

"We always have a lot of people at our tree lightings so I'm really thrilled with the turnout tonight," Fire Chief Benjamin Mickuleit said. "I'm glad this wasn't last week when it was so cold."

The truck bays were decorated with wreaths, holly and a 10-foot Christmas tree surrounded by 100 stuffed toys.

Mickuleit welcomed everyone and opened the festivities.

"Welcome everybody to our annual tree lighting," Mickuleit said. "We will have the Pine Island Elementary School Choir, directed by Mrs. Van Duser, performing a few numbers for us and then we will light the tree. After that I am expecting a very special 'jolly' guest to arrive."

Santa Claus arrived in island fire department fashion right on time.

Children could hear the blaring siren and ringing bells as the fire truck pulled up in front of the fire station. Santa made his way to his chair where the children's pictures were taken. Each child received a stuffed toy and hot chocolate and cookies were served

"This is my first time and it's so different from back home," Sandra Hodges said. "Up North, you have to go to the mall to visit Santa but this is so much better and warmer!"
