Small Business Saturday brings out locals, visitors

November 29, 2017

Pine Island's second "Small Business Saturday" kicked off early under sunny skies and cool fall breezes.

The Saturday after Thanksgiving was earmarked as "Small Business Saturday" by American Express company in 2010 to remind communities to unite behind their local businesses and support them by shopping "small" which ultimately makes "local" communities thrive.

"We learned last year to open an hour early at 9 a.m." Olde Florida Outpost owner Heather Schwarz said. "I've been aware that American Express does this every year so as the campaign host last year I wrote an essay telling them why we should be accepted. They decided we should be included and sent us all of the materials again this year."

Magen Romeo, who performed as Marilyn Monroe at last year's Small Business Saturday, dressed as Rosie the Riveter this year. Rosie the Riveter is a cultural symbol from World War II. She represented the women who worked in factories and shipyards during the war.

"This year's Small Business Saturday includes more vendors than our first year," Schwarz said. 'We have everything from jewelry to skytography."

Participating vendors for the event included: Rachi Farrow - artivist; Annabella's Artwork; Debra Hummer - jewelry; skytography by Quinn Sedam; Andrea B. Spritzer Photography; Jane Ford - artist; Rae Zimmerman - photography; Dianne Wickes - artist; Reel Chase - art; Laurie Flannery - jewelry; Cindy Caudell Fussneci - Mary Kay Cosmetics; Native Nautical Mailboxes - Tommy Tucker and Lynn - jewelry.

"I am thrilled with the turnout," Schwarz said. "At the end of the day we've had a record number of people come through. Every year we get bigger and better."

Bobby Mann performed from 12-4 p.m. Hot dogs and drinks were also served.
