Prescribed burns planned for Pine Island Preserve and Matlacha Pass

November 1, 2017
Pine Island Eagle

To the editor:

This is a notification that the Conservation Foundation will be doing a prescribed fire at Pine Island Preserve at Matlacha Pass, located across from Flamingo Bay. We anticipate it will occur within the next three weeks, weather permitting.

Most burns start at 9 a.m. and finish prior to nightfall. Small amounts of smoke may persist the following day or two. Signs will posted on Stringfellow Road notifying you that a Rx fire is in progress.

The purpose is to burn off dead bahia grass, ahead of wildflower and grassland seeding to occur in December. (That's right! Most of the pasture will be converted back to natural pine flatwoods).
