Lions to hold ‘Save the Sight’ drive at Winn-Dixie

November 1, 2017
Pine Island Eagle

To the editor:

On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Nov. 2-4, from 5-7:30 p.m. each day, Greater Pine Island Lions Club members will be in front of Winn-Dixie collecting donations to "Save the Sight" for residents of Pine Island who cannot afford eye exams and glasses.

Last year, 2016, 24 eye exams and glasses were provided for 23 adults and one procedure to correct vision were provided for a teenager. In addition, by paying the Florida Association for School nurse's dues for our school nurse at Pine Island Elementary, the Association provides vouchers for children in the schools who cannot afford them. The dues are $150 annually. Melissa Glover, RN, BSN, MBA, CEN, School Nurse. January June 2015, students screened at Pine Island Elementary, Mariner Middle School, and Patriot Elementary totaled 818, 76 were referred for glasses. September December 2015, 816 were screened and 79 were referred. Vouchers distributed to students who couldn't afford them were January June 2015, 22, and September December, 14.

We are proud to be able to pay the dues for our school nurse to reach these additional children with eye care.

We hope everyone on the island will visit the GPI Lions Club members at Winn Dixie on the above dates to donate to our project "Save the Sight" on Greater Pine Island for those residents who cannot afford eye care.

If business owners would like to contribute, you may mail your donations to GPI Lions Club, P.O. Box 734, St. James City, FL 33956.
