Dr. Marcus Sherry and Riverdale Dental Associates have welcomed Dr. Christopher Kaouk to the practice. Kaouk has been seeing patients since Aug. 14.

Sherry, owner of Riverdale Dental, has recruited numerous young colleagues over the years.

"The first time I spoke with Dr. Kaouk, he was in Anchorage, Alaska, and I got a positive impression over the phone of who this young man is," Sherry said. "When I met him at my office those beliefs were confirmed."

Kaouk grew up in Naples, Fla. He was 18 years old when he left home for the University of Florida in Gainesville where he received his undergraduate degree. From there he attended Nova Southeastern University of Ft. Lauderdale to complete his doctorate in dental medicine.

"I wasn't sure what career path I wanted to take until sometime during my undergraduate studies," Kaouk said. "That's when I met a couple of people that were involved in dental school and that gave me the opportunity to see what the dental profession is all about. I like the science of it and the artistry."

After receiving his degree, Kaouk joined the U.S. Navy.

"I joined the Navy because my brother went to Annapolis Naval Academy," Kaouk said. "I was 11 at the time he was there and I knew I didn't want to follow him to Annapolis and I joined the Navy in a different way."

During his time in the Navy, Kaouk completed a one-year post-graduate residency in a hospital-based setting with emphasis on acute care, oral surgery, and endodontics at the National Navy Medical center in Bethesda, Md.

"I treated military personnel for everything from fillings to severe injuries," he said.

"From there I was stationed in Twentynine Palms, Calif., for three years where I provided dental care to military personnel," Kaouk said. "Once I finished there, my wife, daughter and I spent a year in Alaska. I knew we were coming back to Florida and that's when I spoke with Dr. Sherry about a position at Riverdale Dental. I remember thinking then that Riverdale Dental wound be a great opportunity."

"Obviously I'm always looking for someone with the dental skills but I'm also looking for someone who relates with people," Sherry said. "Dr. Kaouk has the family background, the Navy background and the professional background. There's a genuineness about him and he will be a great member of our community."

"I like interacting with people, understanding them and making them comfortable," Kaouk said. "Although I've only been here about 6 weeks, I've come to realize how friendly and nice the people of Pine Island are - this is a very special place."
