Olde Florida Outpost to mark one year on Saturday

June 14, 2017

This Saturday, June 17, the Olde Florida Outpost is celebrating its first anniversary with a party and a Marilyn Monroe look-a-like contest.

Heather and Dean Schwarz opened their shop June 18, 2016, and just like the Schwarz's lifestyle, their shop is eclectic and fun.

"We opened last year with a huge party," Heather said. "A few months ago, local artist Jeff Abbott created one of his 'Figure Art' pieces in the image of Marilyn Monroe and we thought it would be a great idea to celebrate our first year with a Marilyn Monroe look-a-like contest.

"Olde Florida Outpost is where you'll find indoor/outdoor furniture, home dcor, clothing, jewelry, and really clever gift items," Heather continued. "From time to time you might even find a truly unique vintage piece we've rescued from our trippy travels."

The Marilyn Monroe figure is staged in the iconic image of Monroe in the movie "The Seven Year Itch" standing over a New York subway grate with her dress blowing up.

"Tim Heitz introduced me to Heather at Olde Florida Outpost," Abbott said. "I recognized they had a memorabilia theme going on and it made me think of Marilyn Monroe. I asked Heather what she thought of a Marilyn Monroe figure art and she liked the idea. Tim came up with the motion detector as a trigger to make the dress blow up just like in the movie."

"Two more 'figure art' pieces are outside Mel Meo's studio at the center," Abbott said. "There's a lady reaching into the mailbox for today's mail and another climbing a ladder against the building."

Prizes for first, second and third place will be awarded for the Monroe look-a-like contest. All attendees at the celebration will get to judge who the three winners are.

Registration for the contest begins at noon on Saturday or you can pre-register prior to the day of the event and receive a $25 gift certificate to the Outpost as a thank you for early registration.

"Contestants don't have to don the trademark white dress," Schwarz said. "Any outfit spanning Ms. Monroe's career will work. We'll kick off the party with champagne and Bobby D Mann will be our guest emcee. There will be free hot dogs and refreshments and at 3 p.m. we'll all sing happy birthday and enjoy some birthday cake."

Olde Florida Outpost is located at 3269 Stringfellow Road in Saint James City.
