Tuesday morning, members of From Our Hearts gathered at Miceli's Restaurant in Matlacha to accept a check for $2,500 from Vinnie and Joe Miceli.
From Our Hearts has held its OctoberBreast fundraiser at Micelis for several years and the Miceli brothers donated 10 percent of their sales from the special event, held October 16, to From Our Hearts.
From Our Hearts mission statement reads: "To raise funds to provide screening and treatment for the debilitating disease of Breast Cancer for eligible people in the Greater Pine Island area."
On hand for the check presentation at Miceli's Restaurant were, from left, Maralee Miceli with Dominic Miceli, Vincent Miceli, Kris Hornsby, Guylyn DeMere, Patricia Downing, Dona Wells, Teri James, Barb Riordan, Sarah Bernardo and Heather Davis.
The Pine Island organization was formed in 2001 by a handful of island residents to send a local resident to a three-day, 60-mile Breast Cancer Walk. That initial effort started with a few local musicians playing music at the Island Hardware store in St. James City and passing the hat.
One hundred percent of the funds FOH raises are donated to Partners for Breast Cancer Care and Regional Cancer Center/Lee Memorial Health System to be used only for residents of the Greater Pine Island area. These two organizations facilitate the qualification process and distribution of From Our Hearts funds to provide screening and treatment for qualified Pine Island residents.
The annual BreastFest will be held Saturday, March 11, from 7:30 a.m. until 4 p.m., at the St. James City Civic Association at 4th Avenue and Lemon Street St James City.
Warm up is at 8 a.m., with the walk beginning at 8:30 a.m.
The event will feature a blind auction, food, fun and live music.
